“My first impression? I thought it wasn’t a good plan to put all your eggs in one basket. I still get that a lot from potential users. It represents a misunderstanding of what virtualization is all about.” – Jay Pritchett, Director of Engineering at Altran North America.
One of the best things about my job at Avid is learning more about process control from some of the smartest people in the industry. I recently spoke to industry-leader Jay Pritchett about physical-to-virtual (P2V) migrations in process control. Despite all the benefits of virtualization, only a fraction of industrial systems have been converted to run on virtual machines. There are good reasons to be cautious. You can read more from our conversation, and get some tips on when you should migrate a control system, at Automation World Magazine’s web site – 4 Tips for P2V System Migrations. This is a sequel to 3 Tips for Safe and Effective Virtualization published by Automation World in their August issue. Both articles are a part of the Control System Integrator Association’s (CSIA) guest blog series. I highly recommend the entire series.
Avid will be back in Automation World in December. What topic would you like to see us tackle? Drop me a line with any ideas, or add a comment below. – James
